An activity that is the most sort after by wildlife lovers. The epic Great Migration of the Wildebeest in Africa.
The Great Migration is a huge rotational migration of millions of wild animals between Tanzania’s Serengeti plains in the south and Kenya’s Maasai Mara in the north. This migration is the only one happening over our planet on such a large scale.
Did you know, that this migration can be seen from space with around 1000 animals per kilometer? Huge columns of wildebeest can be spotted from the space. Guided by the instinct of survival an astonishing number of over a 1.1 million wildebeest and 3,00,000 zebras, gazelle, and topi travel in search of nutritious grasslands and water. These columns of wildebeest travel a huge expanse of 800 to 1000 km of land every single year.
On their way to reach the destination, they have to face the encounter of hungry predators like lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs, etc. This survival of the strongest is popularly called ‘the greatest show of Earth’. A game worth watching for every visitor. The loop takes them from the Serengeti plains to Maasai Mara and back in search of food and water. It is still unclear how these wildebeests travel this long journey, many scientists and researchers believe that it's dictated by the rains and the growing grass.
January, February, and March
At the onset of the new year from January through March the migration is on the verge of Serengeti. If you go to see this migration does not really have a start and end, it’s a non-stop circuit that only has births and deaths of the wildebeest in the wild. This time is a favourable birthing season for these wildebeest that happens in the Ngorongoro Crater highlands. 4,00,000 calves are given birth by the mother wildebeests in a period of three to four weeks. Also inviting the predators to jump-start the action of hunting them down.
April and May
After giving birth to young ones, these herds start drifting towards fresher grasslands in the central Serengeti. By May these groups assemble around Moru Kopjes near Dunia camp. They slowly start crossing the Grumeti river making a feast of themselves for some crocs alongside the river.
June and July
These months bring dry weather in the Western Serengeti and southern banks of the Grumeti River. These river crossings thus are exciting to watch, making it the best time to visit and behold the breathtaking sight of the Great Migration. In July these wildebeest will be found in Masai Mara after they have successfully crossed the river and its dangers.
August, September, and October
During these months the groups start settling in Masai Mara’s northern areas after crossing the Mara River. By September and mid-October, major loss of lives and chaos comes to a temporary end. The wildebeest start their return journey to cross the Mara River once again and head towards the south.
November and December
The groups move down Kenya into Namiri Plains, a place well-known for spotting cheetahs. By the year they spread out towards the east and south of the regions.
This circuit never ends or stops, yet again in the new year, freshly grown grasslands call these wildebeest towards them.
Though the Great Migration can be witnessed throughout the year from different places. The best ones are from June onwards when they start crossing the Grumeti River and then spread over the Masai Mara region. The Migration and the Game make this sight worth a million dollars for a traveler to capture.
